How does e911 work for hosted phones?
The operation of e911 location in our system is as follows:
An e911 location consists of an address and a Fluent Voice DID or Phone Number.
When this is created in the portal, an insert is performed into a third party database run by Bandwidth.com.
Extensions require an e911 location selected in the dropdown to make outbound calls.
Once this is assigned, when someone dials 911 from that extension the DID associated with that e911 location is pulsed out on the call regardless of the TDID used for caller ID pulsed out on a normal call.
The emergency responders then do a lookup with Bandwidth.com to determine where to respond based on the caller ID on the 911 call.
How does e911 work for SIP trunks?
In addition to the above method used for hosted phones, SIP trunks can be configured to pass through the e911 caller ID info sent by the Customer's On-Premise PBX.
It is then incumbent on the End-User or Phone System Installer to configure that equipment to push out the correct DID (which must still be tied to an e911 location) from their system based on what extension within their PBX makes the 911 call.
What numbers can be assigned to e911 locations?
You cannot assign an e911 location to number not on the Fluent Voice network, or a number that has not ported yet.
Why did I get a Geocode error when the address validates at USPS?
When creating an e911 location you may receive a Geocode error indicating the address could not be geocoded.
This can occur because the address is not valid, or because the number cannot be assigned to a valid address.
Deleting an e911 location.
When you delete an e911 location the admin on the account will receive an email:
This is to confirm that you have deleted E911 Location associated with the phone number (215) 555-3333 from your PBX account.
Your changes have been accepted and this address will no longer be used for E911 purposes from your account.
Occasionally the system will be unable to remove the location and you will get an error "unable to unpublish e911 location."
In this case open a Support ticket to resolve.
